Finding Confidence: On & Off the Yoga Mat


I am writing to you from Mysore, India where I on my annual study trip at The Ashtanga Institute. I find this trip so beneficial. not only do I have the chance to study with one of the most amazing teachers in the world but it also gives me a chance to reflect on myself and what this practice means to me on a deeper level.

I spend so much time on my own here. I live on my own, eat most meals on my own, make all decisions on my own, find my own house, scooter etc. In this place I need to be completely confident in myself in order to get things done. So often things go wrong - in fact, in india I am almost guaranteed that things won’t go to plan! I need to trust that everything that is meant to be happening is happening and be confident and relaxed with that.

The same applies in the practice. Always in my first week I feel a lack of confidence in my practice. I always worry that my teacher will not think I am good enough, that other people in  the room might be better than me, and then of course, I feel fear when my teacher gives me new poses that I cannot do them. I start to question myself.

Of course, these thoughts are just a reflection of how I see myself. How we all see ourselves. We all have fears. Someone in the room must be looking at my practice and having the same doubts about their own.

The only thing we have to remember is that everything that is meant to be happening, on and off the mat is meant to be happening and will, in some way, strengthen our confidence.

Before you dive in to the details, I would like to share a short quote with you.  It is my hope that these words will impart the flavour, the underlying current or backbone of this training and give you a better understanding of our perspective of the yogic path.  Author, psychologist and buddhist teacher, Tara Brach writes:

"There are two contrasting motifs of spiritual development that I find its valuable to reflect on:

In the first, and this is the more traditional view, the spiritual path is like ascending a mountain of perfection. Our job is to transcend the lower, more impure self and achieve high and rarefied states of purity and perfection. So what that means is the seductive realms of sexuality and sensuality and emotionally are to be guarded against with great vigilance. And the feminine side, our earthy nature is not to be trusted. In fact, we are supposed to control this part of our being. This has to do with reacting to the perceived blight of original sin. Something is inherently wrong with me.

Carl Jung suggests a paradigm shift, a more mature and friendly vision, so this is the second motif:  Rather than a journey towards perfection, our journey is towards wholeness. Rather than ascending upwards, we are turning to embrace this world, this life, in all its realness. Broken, messy, vivid, alive - so we are becoming genuinely intimate with this life. Our essential nature is trustworthy, is good, is awareness. There is nothing to strive for, that is outside ourselves."

This training will prepare you with philosophical understanding, anatomical knowledge, business understanding and most importantly practical teaching experience; laying the foundation to become a capable, confident and inspired yoga teacher. It is our highest intention that by the end of your training, you are not only qualified to teach yoga, but feel confident walking into your very first class, and teaching from the heart.

What sets the Yoga Village teacher training apart is our emphasis on yoga asana as mindful movement,  practice teaching and hands on assisting. You will go from learning, to doing, to being. This course will fill the gaps that many teacher training programs leave open by providing practical preparation for yoga teaching. Trainees will be expected to attend, observe, assist and eventually teach groups classes in the studio throughout the entire course to enable them to step from the textbook to the classroom confidently.

Teacher trainees will gather monthly from March to October 2015, meeting for a full weekend of theory, personal practice and hands on assisting and teacher.  In addition to the weekend trainings we will meet for a 5 day intensive training retreat.

In between these meets there will be mentoring and assisting,  which will give you a chance to ask questions, receive feedback and  practice what you learn until it feels natural. This takes time, therefore our training has been designed to give you time and space you need to truly understand and consolidate your course work.

Students will also need to commit to attending a minimum of 2 classes per week at the studio outside the teacher training program.

Our training is comprehensive and hands on please make sure that you are available for the following dates. Each of the following dates is a Saturday & Sunday, and will run for approximately 6-8 hours per day. The 5 day retreat dates TBA.

Cora Geroux - Lead Trainer

Cora Geroux is a life coach, yoga teacher and writer. Cora is an ERYT 200, RYT 500, international yoga teacher. She has been teaching yoga classes, sold-out workshops, mindful yoga & meditation retreats and private yoga sessions -  full time since for the last 6 years. In this time Cora has amassed more than 4000 hours of teaching experience, in Canada, America and Australia. Cora first came to yoga in an effort to manage her anxiety, and has been practicing yoga for over a decade. In the yoga world,  Cora has studied with Ted Grand, Jessica Robertson, Frank Jude Boccio, Bernie Clark, Sadie Nardini,  and Richard Miller - among many others. Cora teaches strong and sweaty vinyasa classes, deep, introspective yin yoga and insightful meditation & yoga nidra.

On a bigger level Cora's passion lies at the intersection of western psychology, and eastern spirituality.  At the age of 18 Cora began her study of Psychology at Simon Fraser University, and graduated at 24 with a BA in Psych. In 2014 , Cora became a life coach after training with Julie Parker, Rachel MacDonald and Melissa Ambrosini of The Beautiful You Coaching Academy. She weaves this passion and understanding of the mind and wisdom traditions  into the study and practice of yoga philosophy, energetic anatomy, yoga asana and through her writing. Elizabeth Bennett - Anatomy & Physiology 

Liz  has been teaching yoga and working as a physiotherapist for over 15 years.Having my early physiotherapy career in the hospital system, then moving into private practice where I have remained, I've worked with people in a huge variety of settings, both in a hands on treatment capacity and teaching yoga to clients.

My yoga teaching began at 21, when I enthusiastically started classes at the hospital for staff on site. Formal training began in Sydney, in 2004, with a three-year intensive apprenticeship with physiotherapists and yoga teachers Simon Borg Olivier and Bianca Machliss of Yoga Synergy. After teaching full time at Yoga Synergy, I moved to the Northern Beaches and undertook a Diploma of Yoga Teaching with Michael De Manincor at the Yoga Institute of Australia. I began teaching Anatomy and Physiology to yoga teacher trainees in 2006.

Liz's  Anatomy and Physiology module for Yoga Village is experiential and practical, oriented towards the questions of  "what are we doing in this pose, why and what can we do for the safety of ourselves and our students." By linking what we need to know of the anatomy of the different joints and systems with visual and kinaesthetic practice in class, my intention is for students to know and embody a deeper understanding of the wisdom of the body. Understand what can prevent and alleviate physical issues. Then, as teachers, you will be able to communicate safe and meaningful knowledge to your students.

Ayurveda Spring Clean! Tips for a Healthy Spring

Spring is upon us and as the seasons change so should our diet and activities. Whilst the winter months ask for more settling and hibernation, Spring is the time to cleanse ourselves of that, making ourselves feel lighter in energy before summer hits.

Ayurveda is all about bringing ourselves in to balance, balancing out the effect of the seasons as well as internal and external influences.

Here are some great tips to help you get started:

1) Add more bitter vegetables, herbs and spices to your diet. In spring we start to strengthen and clean out the liver and Bitter foods are said to help a struggling liver. “Bitter herbs cause a reflexive secretion of gastric juices and tone the muscles of the digestive tract. They also support detoxification by helping the liver process incoming nutrients and filter impurities from circulation.” Nadya Andreeva

Examples of bitter foods are: Turmeric,  Bitter Gould, Spinach, Kale, Chard, Broccolli and Watercress

2) Flush Your System with Liquids In Winter our bodies tend to retain liquids – making us feel heavier, and a bit lazier, so in Spring we want to flush that out. Starting your day with plenty of warm water will help that. Try drinking 750ml of water with the juice of half a lemon or lime each morning before you consume anything else. Your body builds up toxins throughout the night so in the morning, before we add to them we want to cleanse them from the body.

How: Warm water with lemon each morning, and a glass of water one hour before each meal. Sip on Ginger tea to stimulate movement of energy and digestion.

3) Add spice to your Meals Add some spice to meals to help stimulate energy within the body. Spices detoxify your lymph, blood, kidneys and bowels.

Examples are chilli powder, cayenne pepper, mustard seeds etc.

4) Get Moving As toxins are stored in the body, within our muscles, in our fat cells, in our joints we want to exercise all of these things to allow the toxins to be eliminated. The key is to get moving every single day. If all you do is sit – even for just one day, it gives the toxins a chance to manifest and settle within the body.

Allow the energy to move through your body - Come to yoga! If you can’t make it then do 10 rounds of sun salutes at home.

Go for a walk outside at lunchtime and breath in the fresh air.  Walk to work instead of taking the train. There are so many ways to incorporate movement in to your life.

5) Body Brush & Oil Massage Before your shower each day use a natural body brush in circles over your skin to stimulate detoxification within the skin cells. Before bed give yourselves an oil massage using coconut oil or almond oil, again using large circular movements all over the body.

6) Introduce a little more raw food to your diet. Whilst winter is a time for warm food (stews soups etc) in Spring we need to combine those cooked foods with something raw. With each meal add either a small raw salad, or a piece of juicy sweet fruit to create that balance between winter and summer.

7) Get outside and breath! Whilst we don’t want to expose ourselves to too much sun we do need vitamin D to help the energy levels. Try to get 10 minutes of sun each day to help build up after a season of being inside. Breath the fresh air deeply in to your lungs!

Raw Sugar-free Salted Nut Butter Cups (Faster than running to the shops to get chocolate!)

On rainy days like this I have trouble fighting my sweet cravings so rather than walk outside, in the rain to buy something that is full of sugar, I decided to try something for myself. I started following this recipe on the 'Julia & Libby' blog (one of my personal favourites) but I lacked all the ingredients so deviated from the plan. The result was amazing! I used silicone muffin trays but if you don't have them you will need to line a muffin tray with baking paper or cupcake papers.


You'll Need


For the Bottom Layer:

  • 3/4 cup Nut Butter - Any will do. (I used a combo of all natural peanut butter, as well as one I quickly whipped up in the food processor with Almonds, Macadamia and Cashews)
  • 1/2 Cup Unhulled Organic Tahini (if you don't have it then add extra nut butter instead)
  • 1 Tbsp organic Coconut Syrup or your sweetener of choice (e.g. rice malt syrup, Maple Syrup, 8 drops of Stevia)
  • 3 Tbsp melted organic coconut oil


For the Top Layer:

  • 1/2 Cup Raw Cacao Powder
  • 1 Tbsp Organic Coconut Syrup or your sweetener of choice  (e.g. rice malt syrup, Maple Syrup, 8 drops of Stevia)
  • 1/3 Cup Melted Organic Coconut Oil
  • 1/4 Cup Cocao Nibs
  • Sprinkle of Sea Salt

Method:

In a large bowl mix up all the ingredients for the bottom layer except the coconut oil and then when well combined add the melted coconut oil and mix through (it saves time before the coconut oil starts setting).

Place one desert spoonful in each muffin mould and smooth over so it forms a layer rather than a lump. Then place in the freezer while you prepare the top layer.

Clean and dry the bowl and then mix all the ingredients for the top layer (except coconut oil and sea salt) until well combined, then add the melted coconut oil. Mix well and then start moving quickly!

Place one small spoonful of the chocolate mixture in each mould, on top of the nut butter and then smooth over until completely covered. You'll need to move quickly before the chocolate sets in the bowl. Once complete sprinkle a tiny tiny bit of sea salt on top of each one and place them in the freezer to set.

They set in about 15/20 minutes and need to be stored in the freezer so they don't melt...

Let's see how long these last :)

About Dan Fanthorpe

Dan has been practicing yoga for over 25 years and teaching for 16 years. He has a background in classical Hatha yoga, including Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, Meditation and Yoga Therapy.

Dan has been blessed by his teacher to teach the Ashtanga Yoga Method as set out by Sri K Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Jois. He is qualified as a Authrized level 2 teacher.

Dan spends most of his time in Newcastle, but travels back to India each year to spend time with his teacher Sharath Jois at KPJAYI in Mysore, India. Dan also teachers workshops and retreats Internationally.

Dan believes that Yoga works on creating a balanced body to live in and a balanced mind to live with.

Yoga allows us to extract the Dharma (practice) from the Dramas in everyday life.

Silence : Meditation is the practice of allowing the mind to settle, and moving beyond the normal everyday chatter we carry in our heads. It is from this space of stillness and silence that we can return to our true nature - perfect balance. This practice will allow for the integration of yin & yang, active and passive within us.

The result? A strong, flexible body, clear and open energetic channels, and a calm, focused mind. Sounds pretty good right?
